Embraer ERJ-145
Embraer built the ERJ-145 as a regional jet for routes too long or too thin for a turboprop. It seats three abreast, one on one side of the aisle and two on the other, so nobody gets the middle seat.
We fly three versions: six ERJ-145 LRs, two ERJ-145 XRs and one ERJ-135 LR. The XR has winglets, stronger engines and an extra fuel tank under the floor. It flies 2,000 nm (3,704 km) with 50 passengers on board, which is why it's our air ambulance. The ERJ-135 is 3.5 m shorter, seats 37, and flies 1,750 nm (3,243 km) with every seat taken.
No middle seat
One-plus-two seating, large windows, and a cabin pressurised for cruising at up to 37,000 ft, above most of the weather.
Long legs
The XR flies Nairobi to Johannesburg non-stop with fuel to spare. Cairo and Dubai are right at the edge of its range: non-stop with a lighter load or a helpful wind.
Hot and high
Rolls-Royce AE 3007 engines are flat-rated. The ERJ-135's AE 3007A1/3s keep full take-off thrust up to ISA+30, which is 45 °C at sea level. Helpful in hot, high places. Like Nairobi.
Two jobs, one cabin
Fifty passengers on Monday. Two stretchers and an ICU team on Tuesday.

The cabin
Three abreast, 2.10 m wide and 1.82 m high along the aisle, with seats at 31 in pitch. There are 50 in the ERJ-145 and 37 in the ERJ-135.
The hold
A 9.2 m³ hold behind the cabin, loaded through its own door. It takes 1,200 kg in the ERJ-145 and 1,000 kg in the ERJ-135. Add the overhead bins, the underseat space and the wardrobe, and the ERJ-145 has 14.6 m³ of stowage.
The air ambulance
Stretchers for two patients, seats for the medical team and family, and an ICU's worth of equipment: ventilator, monitor with defibrillator, infusion pumps, oxygen and suction.

That's the ERJ-145 XR with 50 passengers on board. Johannesburg is non-stop with fuel to spare; Cairo and Dubai are non-stop at a reduced load. The ERJ-145 LR flies 1,550 nm and the ERJ-135 1,750 nm, so Kinshasa is non-stop in all three. Full-weight sectors leave from JKIA: Wilson's runways are too short for them.
